GO GO Gadget Bag

A-Dog needs some help and I’m just the dog to do it. She probably wouldn’t let on about this, but when we go for a walk in the woods, she wears a (gasp!) fanny pack. I know she only does it when it’s too warm for jackets with pockets and when we’ll be hidden under the cover of trees. But has she no pride? Or, at the very least, where is her style?

So, here’s my solution. Remember Sophie? That beautiful Weimaraner lives with her human, Linda, who is a crafter extraordinaire. She makes this bag:
alamode

Simply perfect for what we need and smartly styled. Just the right size to fit the items carried by the hideous fanny pack: cell phone, keys, leash, bug spray. And I’m not waiting for a birthday or special occasion either. This bag is so affordable, I’m saving A-Dog’s face by getting one tout suite. (That means right away in Dog.)

Dogs Without Blogs – Bella

Most dogs have sweet faces, or at the very least, a sweet expression they can muster up when necessary. But the little pup below has the sweetest face I’ve seen in some time. Meet Bella.

What is your name?
Bella

What breed of dog are you?
Well mom keeps telling me that I’m a tiny Yorkshire Terrier weighing only 7 pounds, but I really believe I’m a German Shepard. A really big one. I can do anything and take on any other dog!

How old are you?
15 months old and I have the energy of a young ‘un

Where did you come from (pound, rescue, breeder)?
I came from a very loving home where a nice woman got me from a breeder. However she learned that I needed me lots of running and playing and she couldn’t give me that.

You see I knew I was supposed to find my mom. People kept telling her I would find her but she didn’t want to believe it. I made sure I found her though. My first mom told her daughter I was too much. She emailed her friend who emailed her sister in law who emailed my Auntie Sheri.

Of all the people who offered to take me, even my own groomer – my original mom knew that Mom was the one. She knew that Mom had a puppy before me, Sammy, that she loved and cared for for 15 years. She knew without meeting mom that she was the one to take me and give me all the things she wanted for me to have. So my mom came over to meet me and I made sure she knew I was supposed to go home with her. Mom really didn’t want another Yorkie, but she knew I was the one, I found her. So on 12/5/09 she adopted me and brought me home where we both know we are a match made in Heaven.

What nicknames do the humans call you?
Oh what DON’T they call me. Puppy, Bella Bear, Bear Face, Mama, Sweet girl, monkey, and the list goes on and on….

Do you like any of your nicknames?
My favorite nick name is Puppinella – Italian for little puppy. I will answer when mom calls me that.

What is your favorite walk/hike?
Anywhere I can run free. We go to Bishop Fenwick a lot and there’s lots of room to run and play. Say the word Park and I am there!

What is your go to toy?
Hmm that’s a tough one. Really I love plastic bottles and balls. But I have a fish and an octupus I had from my other home that I love to play with.

What is the most fashionable thing you wear?
Have you met me???? Just try to put clothes on me….see what happens.

What is the oddest thing you’ve ever done?
Um, well this will get me in a little bit of trouble for giggling at this….but one day I was really bored. When Amy brought me upstairs and gave me to mom to settle in for the night I wasn’t ready to go to sleep. So, I jumped off mom’s bed, snuck into Amy’s room and stole her new glasses (that incidently cost 175.00). You see I’m VERY fast and very small which allows me to hide and escape easily. Mom and Amy tried to catch me, but by the time they got the glasses, Amy put her finger through where the lens was supposed to be on the glasses. Mom went under the bed to get the lens, but she only found 3/4 of it. I ate the rest. I decided to crunch on the glass. It was funny watching them chase me, but I’m not so sure the visit to the vet the very next day made it worth it. I guess I am glad that I did it though, made mom make sure she didn’t miss a day at the park after that!

What is your greatest skill?
Being intuitive. I know who needs love and I can tell who is good and who’s not. Mom has a nephew that has Autism and she says I bring him more joy than anything or anyone in his life. He sure is a lot of fun for me too. I chase him until I get tired. I like that I make him laugh. My mom says I just have a natural ability to bring joy to others.

If you could speak only one sentence, what would you say?
I really love my life.

What is your favorite human food?
I don’t get human food. Not purposely anyway. Mom gets frustrated when I find food people leave on the ground but she usually will pull it out of my mouth if she catches me in time. Mom says it’s something she learned from my brother Sam not to feed me human food. She says it’s better for me not to have it.

What do you love most about your human?
I love that she brings me to the park as much as possible, let’s me play, enjoys me, and takes really good care of me. People say we are a lot alike – intuitive, gregarious, social, and easy going…..sounds good to me.

Who is your best friend and why?
Well, there’s 3 other dogs that are my favorite friends in the whole world. First, there’s Bella a Chihuahua Terrier mix. She’s the puppy of a woman my mom works with. She was my first friend and we have a lot of fun when it’s just the two of us. She’s really shy though and can’t be off leash so we have a lot of fun when we’re in the house.

Second, there’s Milo a mixed mutt. He’s Auntie Debbie’s dog. He’s much older than me and he won’t run as much as the other dogs I play with but I like to hang out with him and follow him around. You know like a big brother. Sometimes he gets full of pep and will chase me but usually we just meander. We go to the park a lot together so he’s like a constant friend.

Lastly there’s Sadie. She’s a Beagle and I really have to say I like her the best. She chases me, plays stick with me, and gives me a major run for my money. When we’re around each other no matter what other dogs are there, it’s just me and Sadie. I haven’t seen her since I have been going to Bishop Fenwick and I sure do miss her.

I should call her this weekend and have her come and visit me at the park… maybe I’ll do that.

***************************

Great getting to know you, Bella! Thanks for sharing a bit of your story on the dog blog. Bella’s human, Chris, is an old college friend of A-Dog’s. Nice to know she kept good company in her younger days.

Good Obsession

What can I say, A-Dog is obsessed with moi. I think it’s kinda cute, although that camera can become quite tedious. Quit snapping and let’s PLAY!! She even draws and doodles me in different incarnations. I would say “enough already” but I kinda like it. There can be good obsessions… like a good bone. Or those chipmunks that live in our garage. Plus, the end result of her obsession is kinda cool.

Linda from a la mode is one of Sophie’s humans. She has a great Etsy shop and her blog is a must read. On a side note, she might want to reinstate that peanut butter gravy train… just sayin’. Thanks to Linda for sharing her girl, Sophie.

Gentle Not Mental

Dogs have personalities – that’s why you humans like us so much. I’m sure the arguments of Nature vs. Nurture work for the canine crowd and how a dog forms SELF. However it happens, a dog ends up a unique being with her own quirks and traits. These quirks and traits seem to magnify with age.

tail on the trail

tail on the trail

When my family came to pick me out of the litter as a pup, they say that they picked me because I was gentle, but wouldn’t take any rough stuff from my sibs. A nice balance of nice. Once they took me home, they made it a priority to socialize me with other dogs, big & small, rough & sweet. An important step in any dog’s life, I enjoyed meeting and running off puppy energy with other dogs.

As I get older, my demeanor has changed and we don’t seek out doggie companionship as much as we used to. I’ve mentioned that we walk wooded trails where most of the dogs travel off-leash. Lots of dogs and humans walk these trails and they are a great place to experience nature and be free of streets, cars and non-dog people. Recently, when we meet a fellow four-legger on the trail, I become submissive. And almost any dog that smells submission (a.k.a. fear), will take advantage of it to varying degrees. I’ve been jumped on, growled and woofed at, called-out and sort-of violated. I’ve heard A-Dog (the mama of the house) worry about this situation to Shoes-on-the-Floor (the dad of the house) – that something might need to be done. So, I’ll lay it out for her and we can continue with no worries of mental problems.

I’m going to be nine years old in August. That makes me old. I don’t want to play with these young pups. Not to be all grumpy-pants, but I get enough exercise without being chased. That was fun years ago. Now, I like to walk, occasionally run, and mostly, smell things. Think of all the great smells you’re missing when you run around in circles. If there is an *incident* on the trail, most humans remedy the situation quickly and the only one who remembers the trauma is A-Dog. So, I don’t see this as MY problem.

I am gentle and sweet. Those are my traits. And I’m not a complete pushover. When a dog goes too far, I let him know. Ask the UPS guy if I’m submissive. I’m sure he’d have a completely different story… Woof!

Dog Art

Yup, I’m curating today. It’s amazing how many great paintings are available on Etsy. And when the subject is *Dog*, I can almost smell the acrylics.

Below are some of my favorites. I’m not a big fan of trying to explain why I like a piece. I look and I know. Enjoy the ones that you *know*

Remember me? This little puppy you took into your house and made me a home. You cared for me like a child, doggy-style.

And yes, I peed on the carpet. You thought I’d never get potty-trained, but we did it.

And you don’t call yourself my mom.

You taught me how to behave properly and be polite and I know that took some doing.

Remember our off-leash walks in the wooded dog park, where I would eat anything and everything? Even poop? You made it clear that was not acceptable. But we would return there, sometimes twice a day, because we both loved it and you knew I could learn.

And you don’t call yourself my mom.
******You took me to puppy class and socialized my fuzzy self with the other clueless pups. The best part was after the business end of the lessons, we’d have free play. You’d laugh the loudest at all the playful fur flying and say my name with a grin. You were proud – I could feel it.

And you don’t call yourself my mom.

Now, puppyhood is over and I’m older than you are (if you use the doggy math.) We still walk in the wooded dog park (no more poop picnics), still socialize with other dogs and you still laugh the loudest at my antics and say my name with a grin.

All I can woof is “Thanks Mom!”

Dedicated to all the pet “moms” out there.
Happy Mother’s Day!
