From Sasha:
Troy joined our family two years ago after a stint in a pound and a rescue organization. At first, I thought he was a brown Lab with a coat that had turned rough from malnutrition. And what was with that tail? I mean Labs wag their tails, but this one just whirred….and those tiger eyes… I was soon enlightened by a Canadian vet we would meet on the beach who told me I had teamed up with a CBR. So that’s what the brown water dog was … but how on earth did he end up in Tel Aviv?

Our local vet tracked down Troy’s record. He was brought over by a very wealthy couple from a breeder in Idaho and dumped soon thereafter in a pound – y’know, accessory people. A trainer friend introduced us to Duke, a younger Chessie from Yorkshire in the UK – and apparently there’s only one more in Tel Aviv. The breed has only just been registered here.

Troy does so much: watching him join a group of little kids on the beach and going swimming with them takes my breath away. Every single day, Troy makes sure everyone around him focuses out of themselves and into the great blue wavy horizon because there’s always a chance of more fish in the sea – and hopefully soon, we’ll be joined by a Troyette.

Thanks Troy and Sasha for spending time on the dog blog. We love hearing about rescue dogs meeting their families! If you’d like to see more of Troy, you can check out his gorgeous bit of ocean at TroyDays on Flickr here.

Dogs Without Blogs – San

I don’t know what it is about Minnesota, but they raise them some good dogs! Here’s another that hails from the North Star state and her human, Jessica.

San (rhymes with fawn)

San (rhymes with fawn)

Dog Questions
What is your name?

Hiiiiiiii! I’m San (rhymes with fawn, not fan). It’s a Japanese name. My mom named me after the main character in Princess Mononoke. My name used to be Kenzie, when I was in a foster home. I like my mom’s name for me much better, even though everyone always says it wrong.

What breed of dog are you?
I don’t know! My foster parents thought they saw Alaskan Husky (awesome sled dog racers) in me. I could be one of those–I sure do love to run and pull! And snow is great! I bet I would totally kick other dogs’ butts in the Iditarod.

How old are you?
I don’t know that either! My foster parents thought I was about 2 when they found me, which would make me about 6 now. I don’t act like it, though! Most people who meet me think I’m still a puppy. I have so much energy!

What nicknames do the humans call you?
Santorini, Santoosie, Sweet Pea, White and Nerdy, Squish Face, Sweets, Dolly. . . .

Do you like any of your nicknames?
You can call me anything if you do it in a sweet voice. Or if you’re holding treats. Hopefully both!

What is your favorite walk/hike?
Anywhere there are squirrels to chase! I LOVE chasing squirrels! And bunnies! And cats! Mom gets mad when I chase the cats at home, but I don’t know the ones outside, so I think they’re fair game! Oh! And children! I love it when children come up to me. Especially the smaller ones, because they usually have food on their hands and faces, and I love that! Oh! And I love it when people say I’m such a pretty dog. I love getting compliments on walks!

I see squirrels

I see squirrels

What is your go to toy?
Squeak toys! And plushies! And ropes! Or really anything I can tug (I am sooooo good at pulling). Like your socks! Your sock looks pretty tasty right now. I bet you that sandwich that I can rip out the foot of your sock in 5 seconds flat. And you won’t even find the missing pieces! Hee hee! Oh, and I like Kongs too! Especially when mom fills them with peanut butter or squeeze cheese! Mmmmmm, squeeze cheese. . . .

What is the treat you will do anything for?
Did you say treat? I love treats! I love dog bones and liver treats and soft meaty treats and cheese (ohmigawd cheese!) and hot dogs and apples and melons and cheese (did I say cheese already?) and bacon and noodles. . . .

What is your greatest skill?
Pulling! I’m so good at that! One time, I pulled my mom right to the ground! It was so funny! She did this funny summersault thing in the backyard, and got all muddy. Ha ha ha!

What is your favorite human food?
Cantaloupe. No, tomatoes. Oh, or golden beets! And orange peppers! Oh, or maybe cucumbers! Last summer, I pulled a cucumber from my mom’s garden right off the vine, even through the fence (see how good I am at pulling?), and gobbled it up in, like, 5 seconds. It tasted sooo good!

White & Nerdy

White & Nerdy

How do you feel about the other pets in the house?
To be honest, I liked it a lot better when it was just me around. I mean, I really like to wrestle and play tug with Yuri, but Kaya usually ignores me, and the cats are always hissing at me. Dad always warns me to be nice, but I am nice! Just because Kaya gets up every time I lay down on her bed with her doesn’t mean I’m being mean. I want to snuggle! And if another dogs abandons a bone or toy the moment I enter a room, well, of course I’m going to pounce on it! It’d be silly for me to waste an opportunity to chew a fresh bone, right? And if the cats don’t like being chased, they shouldn’t run right past my nose. That’s teasing! I think they’re the ones that should be nice.

Human Questions
What is the best thing you’ve taught your dog?

I wouldn’t say there’s one best thing; just training her at all is a very good thing. Huskies are a notoriously high-energy breed, and you have to engage their mind just as much as their body or they become very destructive (see below!). So we have near-daily training sessions. She knows the basics: sit, down, stay, leave it. I try to teach her lots of stupid tricks as well. She knows shake (with both paws), high five, dance, roll over, crawl, bow, and we’re working on say your prayers (dog puts paws up on a chair and bows head). San is very intelligent, which makes training her very hard sometimes. She’s always the first of our dogs to “get it,” but she often chooses to ignore me. If she doesn’t see the point in something (and sometimes food is not a good enough reason), she just won’t do it.

How does your dog make you laugh?
Oh, in so many ways. She truly earned her “white and nerdy” nickname. She contorts herself into the weirdest positions when she sleeps–that probably makes me laugh the most.

Oh, is this your knitting?

Oh, is this your knitting?

Has your dog ever destroyed anything in your home?
Boy, has she ever! She steals and eats a lot of socks. She’s eaten holes in I don’t even know how many comforters. She tore a feather pillow apart once too. That was fun to clean up. We can’t keep blankets in her kennel anymore either, because she chews those up too. And she utterly destroyed all three cushions on an old couch we kept in the basement.

What’s the most challenging thing about living with your dog?
It’s not really her fault, but San exhibits a lot of aggression toward unknown dogs. A few years ago, she was attacked in her own backyard. I was living in a duplex at the time, and my upstairs neighbors had just acquired a relative’s large, aggressive dog. San and I left the house for a walk one afternoon, and this dog came barreling around the corner from out of nowhere (I had scanned the yard for him before we left but didn’t see him out there) and just jumped San. It was really scary, and required an emergency vet visit. Ever since the attack, she’s shown a lot of aggression toward dogs she didn’t know prior to the attack, which makes her reliable with only our dogs and my brother’s dogs. The vet described it as a type of post-traumatic stress disorder: basically, she thinks all new dogs are going to attack her now, so she wants to strike first. We’ve taken her to a trainer who specializes in dog-to-dog aggression, and we work really hard to practice with her the skills we learned in class. But it’s a constant struggle, and I miss how easy-going she used to be with other dogs. She used to love the dog park so much, and meeting new canine friends out for walks or at friend’s houses, and now she misses out on all of that. It’s definitely a huge obstacle.

What do you love most about your dog?
Despite her challenges, San really is a sweetheart. She’s the only dog in our pack of 3 that gives kisses. She has a knack (as most dogs do) of knowing when you’re in need of comfort, and she’s a champion snuggler.

Thanks San and Jessica for sharing a little bit of yourselves here. Jessica has a couple of other dogs that live in her home, so stay tuned for their features soon. You can find Jessica at PlushroomSoup.com or at her Etsy shop here.

What a fantastic name, right?

Scout hails from Minnesota and is lucky enough to live with photographer, Johanna, to capture her handsome dog-ness. Let’s meet them both!

Dog Questions
What is your name?
Scout

What breed of dog are you?
Well, no one knows for sure. My daddy say that I’m part coyote, but I don’t think so. I am straight up street dog. West side!

What nicknames do the humans call you?
Oh, these people love the nicknames. Snouters, mostly. Also, Scouters and Coyot. At least I don’t get called what they call my best friend. They call him Fatty. (He’s a little hefty.)

What is your favorite walk/hike?
Did you say walk? Walk walk let’s walk!

What is your go to toy?
Ball? Do you have a ball? I LOVE balls. If you don’t have a ball I also LOVE sticks. Oh, and socks! I LOVE socks!

What is your greatest skill?
My mama says I’m SMART! She talks to me in phrases and sentences and not just one-word commands. I’m smart! Plus I’m fast. Like lightening. Watch me run. Watch me watch me!

If you could be granted 3 wishes, what would they be?
To run without stopping as far I could run. To have my own lake to splash and romp in every single day. And I really, really, REALLY wish I could sleep in my people’s bed with them.

Human Questions
What is your dog’s name?
Scout

What breed of dog do you have?
We have no idea! We think a Border Collie mix. With everything from Jack Russel to Canaan to Basenji to Greyhound mixed in. She showed up on my doorstop when I was living in an urban neighborhood of Atlanta as a 10-week-old puppy. She could be a mix of anything! She’s likely 3rd or 4th generation street dog. 100% mutt.

How old is your dog?
She’ll be 4 in June-ish. Because she was a stray, we don’t know for sure. But I found her in late August 2006, so I estimate her birthday as early June 2006.

What is the best thing you’ve taught your dog?
“Fetch it up.” We use it find her toys. It started when she was a puppy with this Kong frisbee that she’d run off with into the woods and then she’d get distracted and drop it and run off after something. I didn’t want to go hunting around for it, so I taught her to “fetch it up.” So now she can go find her toys, which is handy!

What is your favorite walk/hike to take?
We have miles of trails near our home, and she loves it back there. In the late fall and early spring they aren’t used as much, so we let her off leash. It is a joy to watch her bound and run around. We also have a springer attachment for my bike. She LOVES to run alongside the bike, and it’s easier for me, because she can go fast and I can actually keep up!

What is the most annoying behavior your dog exhibits?
She gets on our bed when we’re not at home! It’s so naughty! It is a pretty recent thing. We think that when her grandpa housesat for us one weekend, he let her on the bed, and now she thinks she belongs!

Has your dog ever destroyed anything in your home?
Nothing like furniture, but the list of dog beds she has shredded is too long to count. And toys. And socks. She’s also eaten her fair share of socks.

What do you love most about your dog?
I love how much she loves. Nothing warms my heart like seeing her when her daddy gets home. No one makes her wag her tail the way she wags it when she sees him! Pure, unconditional love. She’s just a lover. It’s awesome. We have four dogs, and she is definitely my heart dog. I’ve never had a connection with a dog they way I’m connected to her. I doubt I ever will.

Dogs Without Blogs – Marteeny Knox McDougall

Sooooo, I may have to change the name of this new feature… Marteeny Knox McDougall, better known as Teeny, completely has his own blog. I’ve had the pleasure of having Teeny and his great work on the blog before here, here and here. He and his lovely human, Katy, have answered all the questions, so let’s bound right in and meet them both.

Say hello to my little friend

Say hello to my little friend

Human Questions

What is your dog’s name?
Marteeny Knox McDougall

What breed of dog do you have?
I’m not entirely sure, to be honest. Everyone who meets him seems to have a different opinion on it! The most common suggestions I hear are miniature pinscher and some sort of terrier. I don’t really care, as long as he is happy & healthy!

How old is your dog?
He is 5! Each summer we throw him a big birthday party & all the guests bring toys that we donate to our cause. It was 105 last year (and the party is usually outdoors, due to all the dog guests) that I think we’ll move it to fall this time… brutal TX summers!

What nicknames do you call your dog?
Teeny… and on occasion “Are you kidding me? Why on Earth would you do that?”

What is the best thing you’ve taught your dog?
Not to be afraid of people. He’s a rescue and while I don’t know many details (and don’t want to) there was some mistreatment involved; he has none of the trust issues that are common amongst rescue/abused dogs.

How does your dog make you laugh?
EVERYTHING he does makes me laugh. His little unique & individual personality amazes me every single day. Sometimes I could swear he was a person.

Is there any weird behavior you’d like to share about your dog?
Sometimes when you approach him, he ducks his head down to the floor (sometimes he puts it between his front legs) and flips himself over onto his back so his belly is in the air. I’m pretty sure it’s on purpose but I can’t tell if it’s a submissive thing or just a fancy trick to get a belly rub.

What is your favorite walk/hike to take?
I love to take him to the nearby Bull Creek dog park. They have great hiking trails there. Teeny loves to hike, run, you name it. True story: when I first starting dating my husband Todd, he loved to take Teeny jogging with him. Unfortunately, I lived in an apartment complex at the top of a hill. Teeny was fine the first stretch, going down the hill. But he would always poop out coming home, going up the hill. So Todd would inevitably have to pick up Teeny and jog the rest of the way holding him. He said cars would pass and the people in the cars would always point and laugh at him while they drove past. In their defense, it probably looked pretty silly, that big ol’ man (Todd is 6 feet tall) running & holding that little dog. But he loved Teeny so much he continued to take him jogging anyway. That’s how I knew Todd was a keeper!

What is the best toy you’ve given your dog?
That’s a hard one! I’ve never met another dog who absolutely treasures his toys as much as Teeny. He really loves a plushy bear we call Christmas Baby and has absolutely ripped it to shreds. He also really loves tug toys.

If your dog could speak only one sentence, what would he/she say?
Mom – sit down for five minutes! He’s always happiest when me and my hubby are both on the couch curled up w/ Teeny & Tootsie, our miniature schnauzer. I’m always running around the house doing stuff though.

What is the most annoying behavior your dog exhibits?
Sometimes when he gets really really excited, like when someone he really loves comes over, he squirts just a little bit of pee! Also, he can be a little bit protective at times – if someone he doesn’t know very well touches me, he will bark at them!

Does your dog wear anything fashionable?
He loves clothes and has soooo many! I love him in his UT jersey (my hubby is a UT alumni).

Has your dog ever destroyed anything in your home?
The only thing he has ever destroyed was my copy of Sex & the City (the book). Looks like he feels the same way as most men about that series!

What do you love most about your dog?
I love how much he loves life. I love how he inspires me to be a better person. I love how I can just tell sometimes that he’s dying to tell me something. I love what a great sleeping buddy he is. I love everything about him!

Teeny!

Teeny!
