I want this to be the year that all the pieces of my knowledge about health and most every action I take, whether food choice or exercising, play into a very healthy me. Play will hopefully be a key word.

I run, but it’s time to do more.

I know what my body needs (instead of what my brain wants) and it’s time for my body to win that argument.

It’s time to go natural and give up hair color. (I have a plan for that scary bit.)

I have joined the Move More Eat Well workshop at Big Picture Classes run by Cathy Zielske. Not only will the workshop make me think about my actions throughout this year by doing writing prompts and making pages of my progress, there is a community of knowledge whenever I need it in the form of message boards and contacting Cathy directly.

To clarify (Clarity!), I am not starting at Square One. I ran 518 miles last year. I eat mostly whole foods and I cook using lean proteins and lots of fruits and veggies. But I love food and I’m 45. Which means I eat too much and too often and I need to move more to combat my age. Let’s see if I can do it this year.

It’s time.

I’m kicking off a new series called Food at Home with how I managed to start having Family Dinners.

Family Dinners to me are sitting as a family unit around the same table, at the same time and eating the same thing. This may sound like a simple task or it may sound impossible, but let me give you a little back story to understand where I was and how I got my family to the table.

My boys, who are now 8 and 5, were early risers from the get-go. It didn’t matter when I put them to bed at night, they would both still rise around 5am every day. To make sure they would be well rested and not cranky, bedtime was early, which did not accommodate having a family dinner all together. I fell into a pattern of feeding the children early, then feeding myself and my husband much later.

That’s the nutshell of it, but there were other factors:
:: My oldest is a fussy eater.
:: My youngest was a micro-preemie.
:: My husband’s schedule is different every day, working at night a couple times a week.
:: I went from part-time work to full-time to work-from-home.

So, how did I do it? These are the steps I used…

1 :: Make a commitment
This is a must. Whether you are going to try to eat as a family once a week or every day, you have to commit your mind and your time to this project.

2 :: Make a plan
You’ll need to figure out time to shop, cook and schedule your time to eat as a family. Be realistic. If your daughter has a soccer game at 5pm and your two-year-old needs to eat soon after, you may want to skip that night and feed at will. Your plan should include prepping your family for this change. They need to know that it will be the same table at the same time eating the same thing for one and all. No excuses or alternatives, period.

3 :: Make a menu
Write down what you will eat on each night of your family dinner schedule and create a shopping list from that menu. I have a go-to set of recipes for family dinners. These recipes make it easier to shop without forgetting ingredients and faster to prepare the meals, so we can eat at a set time. A slow cooker or crock pot is a great way to fix a meal that is ready when you are.

4 :: Make one meal
To keep my sanity and to focus a more homemade, healthy approach to meals, this was so important. With a fussy eater and everyone’s preferences to certain foods, this can be difficult. You may need to be strong and take some kid-size criticism (that can feel like a giant’s), but making one meal that eventually everyone will eat, is a victory!

5 :: Make peace with the imperfect
So, you’ve done the first four steps and feel great about your plan. Be ready for resistance. If this is something new for your family, they will protest to different degrees. Rely on step 1 and know that this is a good thing for your family and they WILL get used to it.

Our family started having these dinners about two years ago and it was a great choice for us. I hope that if you’re considering taking on the challenge that my experience helps in a small way. I wish you luck in your journey (you’re going to need a little.)

I recently found a blog that sent my healthy heart a-flutter. It’s called Not Dabbling in Normal (love it already) and they are hosting a 2nd annual Real Food Challenge this month.

During the month of March we’re having the Real Food Challenge. Challenging ourselves and our readers to eat fewer processed foods and focus on eating Real Food.

My goal for this challenge will be to make a challah once a week for Shabbat. Challah is an egg bread that is braided and is an integral part of the Shabbat traditional dinner where a blessing is said over the bread. Even though I’m not Jewish, I agreed to raise my sons in the Jewish faith and we have a Shabbat dinner most every Friday night. I usually purchase the loaf and sometimes they are hard to find in my area. Plus, challah makes the most excellent french toast over the weekend.

So, that’s my goal. Not exactly life changing in itself, but one more step in the direction of my own real food journey. Do you want to join me? Just pick one thing/change to do in March that involves real food and I promise, you’ll feel great about it by April.

Check out the challenge and check back here for the Great Challah Experiment next week.

I’m really not trying to shock you or give you a bug phobia… I have a point to make.

That little critter on the corn shows the natural and organic farming of my CSA. They do not use pesticides, so say hello to my little friend.

You will have some opportunistic creatures looking for a good time on some of your produce when you choose local, organic foods. This little caterpillar looks like he died happy.

As you walk through the grocery store produce section, everything is arranged beautifully. The colors are bright and vibrant, fruits and veggies are gathered in an orderly fashion. It’s truly appealing. But what is in or on those goodies that you can’t see? When you buy that beautiful red apple from Chile what are you really getting for your money?

This here is no preachy blog. There will be no finger pointing and tsk tsk-ing. But I’d love for you to come away from reading this tiny diatribe and think about the food you buy and feed to yourself and your family. If you’ve never thought about buying local, check out LocalHarvest.org. You can find information about CSAs, Farmer’s Markets and Co-ops. It’s not only fruits and vegetables, you can seek out grass-fed beef and cage-free chickens, honey, dairy, eggs, the list is endless.

You can be your own farm-aid.

p.s. That ear of corn up there was THE best of the season so far.
When I say again, I must give you a little background…

I’ve never been a runner, I’m more of a jogger, but it’s not cool to say jog anymore. That phrase got held back in the 70s and now it’s run. Because I like to be honest, I have to qualify my running with the adjective, slow. I’m not being modest or humble. I’ve been paced by elderly women.

Back in 2001, hubs and I decided to do something healthy together. We signed up for a half marathon for October of that year and literally started training in January. We did our due diligence and were able to race that fall. My goal was to finish and that I did. Mind you, I think I was four spots out of last place, but who cares? I ran 13.1 miles in one go and can cross that off my “Life List.”

I’ve dabbled in running since then, but no serious training. My goal now is to make it a part of my weekly routine. My 44-year-old bod actually needs to run, as opposed to walking, because I’d have to walk for triple the time to get the same benefit. I need efficient workouts, period.

Luckily, for my birthday last month, my husband really went all out on the technology gifts I’d been drooling over. I’ve been using the Nike + iPod Sports Kit. It’s a wireless sensor and receiver that work with my iPod nano to track my runs. I love it so far. And I’m hoping it helps in training for a 5-mile race me and the hubs are considering in October. He’s a natural runner, of course, and it’s just a little irksome that he makes it seem so easy. But I just do my jog…
and call it a run.
If you’re reading this for the first time, you can reference what this is about here. I have mixed feelings about the whole process.

I wouldn’t qualify it as a success or a failure. I’m disappointed, but not because I haven’t reached my goal. The goal was never the point. It would have been a nice bonus and it would have meant that I had finally conquered my real foe… stress eating.

There will always be stress and I can reasonably handle the everyday stress of life. My issue lies with the BIG stress moments in life. It becomes a cycle for me: big life stress = eating = less sleep = no time for exercise = more eating. I’ve identified this. I KNOW this, and yet, I cannot conquer it. I may never be able to defeat this behavior. I am not a person who likes to resign herself to anything, but I may have to find a way to accept this behavior as part of me to let it go.

Let’s examine the sunny side of things, shall we? I eat healthy almost all the time, mostly organic, fresh, local foods that make me feel great. When there is no stress, I keep active on most days. I can run three miles at a clip; I can play a game of tennis without huffing and puffing; I can swim 1/4 mile; I can play with my kids; I can walk/run with my dog in rugged terrain. These are all signs of a healthy human.

So, my little countdown counter in the sidebar will be going away this week. Maybe I’ll replace it with something that focuses on health instead of numbers. I really won’t miss it at all.

The outcome for 44 x 44 is not what I wanted and I wish it were different. But wishing for this to change may be like wishing to win the lottery: a long shot that keeps my focus on a fantasy instead of the reality of what’s important.
Bear with me though, this is good stuff.

During the celebration of the 4th of July, we were able to enjoy much grilled food at a couple different venues. One of these places is a unique reserve plopped in the middle of farmland and suburban neighborhoods. It contains a man-made lake with a beach, hiking/XC-ski trails, playgrounds, a couple clubhouses and a busy summer camp. Near the lake are scattered picnic tables, each with its own grill.

There are certain smells to summer, but one I’d like to do away with is lighter fluid. It filled my nose this past weekend and I swear, it brought up a base instinct to run, like Bambi’s family in that forest fire. It just smells wrong. So, how do you start a smoking hot grill fire when you don’t have a propane grill without using an evil accelerant? Read on…

First, you need natural, hardwood charcoal. You don’t have to go anywhere special for this – we buy ours at the grocery store. Next, you will need a device to naturally get the charcoal to burn into coals. At your local hardware store, they should have something called a charcoal chimney starter, which is a tall cylinder with a handle and holes in its side. We actually use a homemade version of a chimney starter made from two coffee cans and it works just fine (instructions below.**) And finally, you’ll need a very small amount of newspaper and matches.

Put the newspaper on the bottom of your upright cylinder, then fill it with the charcoal. You need to leave room for air to circulate throughout the cylinder, so be careful not to pack the newspaper or the charcoal too tightly. There should be a hole near the paper to light it with your matches. Now here is the hard part – you wait. It’s not glitzy, like the big flames you get from lighter fluid that can set your hair on fire. This method is a slow burn, but you will notice that what you eat from your grill actually tastes better. And you’re shunning those non earth-friendly petroleum products that seep into your food.

**Homemade Chimney Starter Instructions:
(These couldn’t be more simple…)

Take two coffee cans, one large and one regular size.

Punch quarter-size holes near the bottom of the larger coffee can in whatever manly way suits you.

And you’re ready!

To celebrate these grilling days, here’s a card just listed in the Etsy shop. It’s the first time ever that we’re offering a single card, so get it while it’s hot. Har har har.

But before I get to that, I should recap what 44 x 44 means. At the beginning of 2010, I decided to pursue losing 44 pounds by my 44th birthday on August 24. I was feeling good and, more importantly, ready to shed the excess weight I’d been putting on since meeting my husband (yes, it’s all YOUR fault, Honey [love you!])

I’ve been stuck for weeks at the same weight. It’s not a mystery… I don’t work out enough. This body I’m lucky enough to have is one that needs daily, intense physical activity. And the older I get, the more true that becomes. This body also suffers from Crohn’s Disease and that’s a curve ball I’ve had to accept. This body also needs to care for her young boys, move forward in her one-woman business, create & manage schedules, do housework, organize clutter, get enough rest, tend to the dog, prepare meals and shuttle the little people where they need to be.

So, the inner turmoil? I truly need to let it go. If I want to make 44 x 44 a priority, then that’s what I should do. Stop lamenting the fact that I’m busy and “how am I ever going to get it done?” This body is just waiting for my mind to get out of the way.
My hesitation is to try and spare my readers of a pity party. But I’m sick of feeling sick.

And I’m guilty for feeling that way, because in the grand scheme of life, my health is pretty okay. I have to remind myself of that when I’m feeling like a petulant child who can’t do what she wants when she wants.

But my main symptom is exhaustion and it’s like black, smoky hands dragging down my body and spirit, pushing me in this crappy cycle of pity and guilt.

Heavy, right? I feel like Tony Soprano…

Tony: Oh, Ma, you gotta stop! You gotta stop with this black poison cloud all the time! ‘Cause I can’t take it anymore!
Livia Soprano: Oh, poor you!

The pity party has ended. Thanks for coming!
